ASUU and other groups halt operations at LASU and go on an indefinite strike

 

All academic and administrative operations of Lagos State University (LASU) have been essentially suspended since the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of

staff unions, which includes the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU-LASU), declared an indefinite strike.

This interruption occurred just a few days before the university's second semester exams for 2024–2025 were set to start on Monday, August 4.


The committee declared the start of the industrial action over unresolved issues with the school management in a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the university's vice-chancellor.

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT-LASU), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU-LASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU-LASU) make up the joint committee.

ASUU-LASU chairman Ibrahim A. Bakare and secretary Sylvester O. Idowu, as well as SSANU-LASU chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal and secretary Waheed Majekodunmi, jointly signed the notification.

"We write to notify you that an indefinite strike action has begun at Lagos State University, following the decision made at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, & NASU-LASU) that an indefinite strike action should begin effective from Thursday, 31st July, 2025," the statement said.

All of its members at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and the LASU Epe campus were instructed by the unions to leave their positions and withdraw their services immediately.

They emphasized that until all demands are fulfilled by the relevant authorities, the strike would go on indefinitely.
