Wike Finally Speaks Out About the FCT-Military Conflict and Issues a Serious Warning Regarding the Rule of Law
For the first time, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has addressed the alleged altercation between FCT officials and
certain military commanders in Abuja.
Wike stated unequivocally that he will continue to respect all governmental institutions, including the Nigerian military, and that he is dedicated to upholding the rule of law.
He declared that any move that compromises due process in the capital city's land administration would not be tolerated by his administration.
He claimed that the conflict started when military forces allegedly attacked FCT officials implementing development control at a contested location.
The Minister stated that after learning that top FCTA personnel had been attacked while performing their official duties, he made the decision to personally intervene.
He underlined that every Nigerian, regardless of rank or organization, must operate in accordance with the law, and that the FCT Administration will always do so.
"We will continue to respect all government institutions," he declared, adding that maintaining appropriate land use in Abuja is part of his responsibility as a minister.
Wike emphasized that Santos Estate Limited was lawfully granted the land in question for park and recreational uses rather than residential development.
He pointed out that no organization or person has the power to change authorized land distributions without according to due process.
He remembers working on a similar case with the Nigeria Police in which illicit buildings were found beneath a power line.
According to Wike, he personally visited the site and the Inspector-General of Police intervened to stop building.
The Minister reiterated that the FCT Administration will continue to forcefully and equitably enforce urban development legislation.
Additionally, he issued a warning that any attempt to interfere with official enforcement operations will be dealt with legally.
